First of all: I do not compare the US and Germany, I am just looking at the level of social insurance that is given in the US (which is almost nothing compared to every other country I know something about their level). It is just that the USA has the lowest level of social insurance compared to every other country of the so called "free world", the block that opposes socialism in Europe for a couple of decades. The difference is by quite a margin: the discussions about Obamacare being socialistic looks very obscure to anyone in Europe, as we have much more regulated health care then the US has even after Obamacare. It is crazy. The minimum responsibilty of any community that want to be a state or a nation is to protect their sick. And there are those in the USA that calls this "socialism". That is nonsense.

As for neo nazis. You are right in some way but that isn't the point. We have trouble with a very right wing party since 2015 which seems to be conquered by neo nazis (it did not start that way when it was founded) related to a totally irrelevant movement before. But it is not the point when it comes to the functionality provided by a community.

Populists like Trump have appeared everywhere in Europe and sometimes seized power (Hungary, Poland, Italy) or played a relevant role in policy making (Denmark, Austria, ...). The point is: like cult leaders they are promising protection but are not able to provide it with the policy they offer. They are selling snake oil. The basic feature of populist politics is that it simply does not work and is therefore dismissed by politicians who have a better understanding of the problems involved. And should be dismissed by voters when they feel responsible for the whole thing at all and do not want to harm others with a politically relevant, but ineffective wishful thinking that hurts their neighbors. And themselves, eventually, in the process.
