I think the larger issue at play here is that social media and free speech on the internet made the Flat Earth Society rise again after being almose broke before Web 2.0 entered the scene. Since then, social media and user-generated content on the internet has become the home of wild conspiration theories and misconceptions of reality, which seem to be the more popular the crazier they are.

The division of the USA is heavily grounded on Trumpist looking at an alternate reality that is more and more disconnected from facts. Tons of desinformation on politically very relevant topcs on the Internet are the strongest poison of our time, destroying societies. When we do not agree on facts a political debate is impossible, as such a debate shall not discuss what is, but what should be and how to get there.

I have no clue what to do about this. I can just raise the alarm. But the belief that people are able to make up their mind in a reasonable way regardless of what is said under the protection of free speech is an illusion. It simply doesn't happen. Instead the amount of madmen running around telling everyone crazy stories about what is is increasing every day.
