That "stupid plan", wasn't it Trump's plan since Feb 2020? "We get out and you get Afghanistan" was the bottom line of the deal Trump made with the Taliban then (and all Trump got was the security of the remaining foreign troops until they leave). Everyone was well aware of that and Trumps voters wanted this.

What remains to question is what intelligence and information was there allowing to anticipate that the Taliban would win much faster than expected. In Germany a lot of fingers point to our intelligence service BND which failed to realize how things where going this year in Afghanistan. As our government was operating on the same wrong assumptions the Biden administration was. Looks like everyone in NATO was. Why is that?
